Our 2017 birthday celebrations this year took place in Egypt. Fizzstah and I have just returned from enjoying some winter sun. We enjoyed average daily temperatures of 28 degrees! We spent 10 nights at the Mercure Hurghada Hotel and I would like to make the following observations and recommendations.
The location of the hotel is very good – the airport transfer time is advertised at 30 minutes but it actually took us about 15 minutes to reach the hotel.
The hotel is located at Aafaga Road Km 12, Hurghada, Egypt, which is a beach location. There are three large swimming pools and a few children’s pools. Both the beach and pool areas have plenty of sunbeds and umbrellas. Although the beach area can get quite busy. Some guests secure sunbeds from as early at 0500 hrs. The hotel could and should do more to stop this bad behaviour! Although you can always find a nice spot by one of the pools.
Expect to be approached by sales staff if you opt to stay by the main pool. They will encourage you to book trips, watersports activities and beauty treatments. To avoid the sales pitch move to the relaxation pool areas where sales staff are not permitted.
Within the hotel complex, there are a number of independent stores including perfumery, pharmacist, general stores and jewellers. This means that you can easily pick up holiday souvenirs. The store owners are helpful but not as determined to make a sale like those in some outside locations, which is pleasant.
We booked an all-inclusive option, but when viewing the hotel website I found information about “ultra all inclusive”. Prior to the trip, I emailed the hotel to gain information about the “ultra all inclusive” option and to make a restaurant booking to celebrate Fizzstah’s birthday. The guest services team in particular Maya Mitulski was really helpful and sent me an information pack explaining the “ultra all inclusive” package. Maya also secured the restaurant reservation for me. We paid an additional $300 USD to upgrade to the “ultra all inclusive” package because this option included two premium meal options, use of the mini bar, access to an exclusive bar serving premium alcoholic beverages and room service.
We were allocated room 2015. This room benefits from having two balconies and great views. One balcony overlooks the beach and the other overlooks the main pool. (This room is located on the 3rd floor and there is no lift so bear that in mind but the stair climb is easy). I would like to give a special mention to housekeeper staff member Hwgazy El Saasy – who was on hand to supply additional toiletries, towels and water – especially on the day when Fizzstah was feeling unwell. He also decorated our room on to celebrate Fizzstah’s birthday – making her feel very special.
The all-inclusive food selection is well cooked and flavoursome but the section and variety should be expanded. I would recommend paying the extra to use the premium restaurant and getting a larger menu selection.
I would like to thank the waiting staff – especially A. Allah Gad and Ali Gami – who made sure that Fizzstah had a wonderful birthday meal and sang happy birthday in English and Arabic.
The restaurant staff really work hard to meet your needs. Special thanks to “Hany” in the main restaurant who did not let my birthday go unnoticed. The waiting staff stopped their normal duties at breakfast to sing happy birthday to me – this was really sweet!
The spa is fully equipped comprising a sauna, steam room, jacuzzi and treatment rooms. There are male and female changing rooms with lockers to secure your personal items. The treatment options are extensive covering facials, body scrubs and a variety of massages for both men and women. They also offer couple packages.
To celebrate our birthdays, I booked the Golden Spa Experience. We received 2 hours and 40 minutes of pampering! The two beauty therapist Nada and Immi where both very welcoming and professional.
The hotel staff are one of the biggest assets to this establishment. The animation team work really hard. The evening shows and activities are all very inclusive and entertaining. We were treated to a rendition of Mamma Mia and the entertaining “Spinning Man” was a real treat. After the evening show, you can move into the Disco and dance the night away.
I would currently rate the hotel as an 8 out of 10. If the food selection and variety were improved then the score would be a firm 10/10!
